JAKARTA – Raja Ali Haji Maritime University (UMRAH) Tanjungpinang, the University of Rhode Island (URI), and the Riau Islands Provincial Government held a meeting to discuss cooperation plans between several related parties at the Dharmawangsa Hotel, Jakarta. Tuesday (17/1/2023).

The meeting was filled with discussions of cooperation between the three parties, guided by the Vice Chancellor of URI for International Affairs, Prof. Kristin Johnson. Starting with remarks from each leader, UMRAH Chancellor, URI Chancellor and Regional Secretary of Riau Islands Province.

The leaders of each delegation see the importance of continuing this cooperation for mutual progress in improving the ability of Human Resources at UMRAH and the Riau Islands Provincial Government and the welfare of the people in Riau Islands Province.

During the meeting, the UMRAH Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Agung Dhamar Syakti, S.Pi, DEA conveyed the potential of UMRAH as a machine to produce various maritime-based innovations with a location in the Maritime Province with most of its area being the ocean, . This view is in line with the Provincial Secretary. Kepri, Drs. Adi Prihantara, MM who conveyed the concept of blue economics, encouraging marine potential to be utilized for the welfare of the land.

URI’s Director of Cooperation in Education and Business, Brook Willians Ros said that URI has a serious concern and desire to cooperate with Indonesia, this is evidenced by the dominance of cooperation that has been carried out from Indonesia.

In addition, URI is the University in America that has the most cooperation with Indonesia. URI’s Dean of Environment and Life Sciences, Prof. John Kirby has great attention to HR capacity building, such as the proposed online English training program which will be directly taught by lecturers from URI, can be followed by those involved in the implementation of education and in the field in the UMRAH environment and school teachers. In addition, he also encouraged the opening of a S2 (Master) level study program before proceeding to the opening of a S3 (Doctoral) program with the Sandwich method to get a double /win degree.

On that occasion, a meeting agenda was also planned for the stabilization of concepts and licensing proposals from the ministry, which will begin during URI’s visit to UMRAH later.

Furthermore, the three parties agreed to sign the cooperation the next day. Wednesday (18/1/2023).

The meeting was closed by the Rector of URI, Prof. Marc B. Parlange while hoping that the results of the discussion of cooperation in education, research and international programs can be implemented and sustainable.
